Turkish FM: “We hope the U.S. changes its position on the Armenian Genocide”
During a program broadcast on Turkey’s NTV, Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu talked about his upcoming visit to Washington D.C. on 20-21 April. The foreign minister also touched upon Armenian-Turkish relations and the Armenian Genocide, writes ermenihaber.am.
When asked if the U.S. government might change its position on the Armenian Genocide on the occasion of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, the Turkish foreign minister particularly said:
“I hope the U.S. changes its position. If it doesn’t, that will cause a great blow to U.S.-Turkey relations. In any case, the U.S. is aware of that.”
Cavusoglu emphasized that the Armenian Diaspora is only remembering one side of the story as it puts in more efforts ahead of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide.
When asked if Turkey intends to implement the Armenia-Turkey Protocols after the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, Cavusoglu said: “Armenia must be able to normalize relations with its neighbors first.”
Once again, the Turkish minister linked Armenian-Turkish relations to the Karabakh issue.
“Armenia has to show that the Armenians can live in peace in this region. A country that has problems with all of its neighbors has to think for itself-does it have a problem with itself, or with others? Turkey will normalize relations with Armenia, if Armenia meets the conditions.”
