Donation coupons with Andranik’s signature for Genocide survivors
Donation coupons featuring Andranik Ozanian’s signature were issued in the USA after the Armenian Genocide, aiming to help the survivors. One of the items of the book “100 stories behind Genocide-related items” published by the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute (AGMI) is the “Donation for salvation” coupon issued by the central committee led by Ozanian in late 1919 in the USA.
The AGMI public relations department told Armenpress that the coupons bore the inscription “Donation for salvation for those missing Armenia”. Catholicos Khrimian Hayrik (Mkrtich Khrimian) is portrayed in the centre, with the semicircular laurel reading “Hayrik.”
The US flag is on the right, and the flag of the First Republic of Armenia is on the left side of the picture. The coupon features the donator’s first and second names, Stepan Soghomonian, and the amount of money donated, $100. The committee director Andranik Ozanian’s and treasurer K. Margarian’s signatures are in the bottom.
On the right corner of the coupon an Armenian needy family consisting of the father, mother and 2 children is depicted, one of them begging for food or money with his hands outstretched. Armenia is portrayed on the left corner with Ararat, Mount Süphan and Lake Van.
