“Hayartun” Center hosts exhibition dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the Nersisyan Armenian School

On December 12, “Hayartun” Center of the Georgian-Armenian Diocese, in association with the National Archives of Armenia and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, hosted the opening of an exhibition showcasing documents devoted to the 190th anniversary of the foundation of the Nersisyan Armenian School. Among the attendees were representatives of the National Archives of Armenia and representatives of the Armenian community of Tbilisi, reports the Georgian-Armenian Diocese to “Hayern Aysor”.

Visitors saw letters, decrees, records and photos of the activities that the first secondary school of Transcaucasia has carried out over the past century. Those photos and documents are evidence of the greatness of this educational institution and the role that it has played in national education.

In his opening remarks, Director of “Hayartun” Center Levon Chidilyan talked about the scenes that members of “Hayartun” recently shot in the preserved building of the Nersisyan Armenian School and regretted that the building is now a private, partially renovated property.

The visitors attentively listened to the speech by Director of the National Archives of Armenia Amatuni Virabyan, who talked about the Nersisyan Armenian School established through the persistent efforts of the late Primate of the Georgian-Armenian Diocese Nerses Ashtaraketsi.

President of the Union of Armenian Intellectuals of Georgia, historian Yenok Tadevosyan attached importance to the charity acts that the school has carried out at the catastrophic moments for the Armenia people

Poet, translator Anahit Bostanjyan gave a touching speech and ended it by reading her poem devoted to the historic school.

Giving his blessing and expressing his words of appreciation, Primate of the Georgian-Armenian Diocese, Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan appreciated the cooperation between “Hayartun” Center and the National Archives of Armenia and expressed gratitude for the donation of the exhibited samples to “Hayartun” Center. The diocesan leader emphasized that having a highly valuable Armenian school is one of the guarantees for preservation of the Armenian identity in the Armenian Diaspora and that the idea of its establishment must become a reality.

Head of department of the National Archives of Armenia Gohar Avagyan explained the content and significance of the documents showcased at the exhibition.

The exhibition dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the foundation of the Nersisyan Armenian School will run until December 27.
