Orhan Pamuk: “Turkey is in an atmosphere of fear”

2006 Nobel Prize winner, Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk has declared that Turkey is in an atmosphere of fear. “Fear is the worst thing in Turkey. Everyone is afraid. This is abnormal…The level of freedom of speech has dropped to the lowest level in Turkey,” Pamuk said in an interview with Hurriyet, reports “ArmenPress”.
The writer accuses the Turkish government of cracking down on the media, especially oppositional journalists. “My friends tell me that even the most pro-government journalists are under pressure,” Pamuk said.
Orhan Pamuk is one of the Turkish intellectuals having recognized the Armenian Genocide and was exiled from Turkey for stating that “more than 1 million Armenians and many Kurds were killed in 1915” in an interview with a European newspaper.
