Turkey is on the brink of an internal war-Taner Akcam
In his latest article, famous Germany-based Turk historian Taner Akcam covered the latest developments in the region, including the ISIS trying to seize the Syrian city of Kobane bordering Turkey, the Kurds’ resistance, Turkey’s passivity and expressed concern that Turkey might face an internal war.
Tert.am presents the article with some reductions:
“Either I’m living far away and don’t know what’s going on in the country, or unfortunately, at the moment, many people don’t notice the nature of the situation they are in.
What’s happening is more than just the hostility between the ruling “Justice and Development” Party and the Kurdish Labor Party (PKK).
However, the local forces aren’t the only roleplayers in this period. Washington, Moscow, Tehran, Er Riad and Tel Aviv are also the direct roleplayers of this stage.
Your position on any issue shows what kinds of relations you want to establish with these centers, and you especially have to take your steps carefully.
The aftermath is simple. Only one thing is decisive-the power of your weapons and the alliances that you are a member of.
The rest is just meaningless words.
Man eats land, and it will eat others on that land in order to eat that land.
The large ethnic and religious groups in the Near East have engaged in a battle with powerful countries to eat the land, and in this period, they will eat each other up.
The foreign powers of the region are nothing but crows eating the offal that prolongs the process of eating.
The U.S., Europe, Russia, Tehran, Tel Aviv and Er Riad-all of them will try to find the most favorable way for them in this period when people are eating each other up.
Another law is the following: In this battle, those who rely on foreign powers without creating internal alliances will be hurt the most.
The Turks, Kurds, the Sunnis and Shiite Arabs are the key roleplayers in this battle. Some will try to keep the lands that they already have in their hands, while others will try to expand. Foreign powers won’t stop the battle as long as they still haven’t found the solution that they believe is the right solution for them.
Mass killings, including genocides aren’t ruled out.
There’s nothing new on the plate. Since ancient times, the animal called man has always solved land issues in the same way, and it will solve it in the same way now.
However, there are two matters of concern. The first one is the Turkish President’s statement that there is no difference between the “Islamic State” grouping and the Kurdish Labor Party (PKK), and the other is that the PKK is calling the Kurds to come out to the streets.
I’m not interested in the ideological preferences of the roleplayers. What I’m interested in is how we can end this battle of eating land (people) with as few human losses as possible.
What can we do to have the greatest capital called “man” get out of this mixed situation with as few damages as possible?
The answer is simple. We shouldn’t allow the nations living side-by-side become enemies during this war.
This means we have to see the Turks and Kurds united as one.
If the Turks and some Kurds turn Turkish cities into a battlefield because of the Islamists, that will lead to a war.
After the Bingiol events, the government declared that “the culprits have been punished”, but this is the end of the legal state and the start of forest rules. The road to punishing groups is short.
If they act reasonably, the Turks and Kurds will come out of this with the fewest damages, but why are others provoking an internal war? Are they digging their own graves, or do they believe that they can achieve something better by killing each other?
The expressions “My coercion of force is fair” and “you started it first” will become the reason for more killings. Can’t they see that?
“The ones provoking this war have also predicted the consequences of it…”-this is the most intimidating expression now…”
