Presentation for the 34th Issue of the Haigazian Armenological Review. In course of the presentation of the Armenological Review, scholars from Lebanon and Armenia stressed the importance of Armenology.
Of the main issues brought up by both Armenian and Diaspora Armenian scholars, once again the Armenological field became the core of this beneficial initiative held yesterday, on July 23, at 7 p.m. in the Conference Hall of Haigazian University, and attended by the Lebanese Armenian scholars and academic figures and guests from Armenia.
The opening of the event was done by the Director of the Armenian Diaspora Research Center of the Haigazian University Andranik Tagesian, who after greeting the participants, focused on art events, developments referred to the last 20-year history, as reflected in the book, suggesting optimistic trends in celebrations, presentations and other initiatives taken place in sequential order.
Thereafter, he presented, one by one, the speakers of the day – Dr. Artur Dumanyan, Rev.Fr. Andranik Kranian and Dr. Paul Haidostian.
Firstly, he gave the floor to the guest speaker, the Deputy Director of “Noravank” Scientific-Educational Center Artur Dumanyan.
Dr. Dumanyan presented an historical overview on “The current problems of Armenology and Haigazian Armenological Review” referring to the Haigazian Armenological Review within the period from 1970, the year of its foundation, to our days.
According to Dr. Dumanyan, in view of the hardships faced by the Diaspora, publication of an Armenological Journal could be qualified as “a heroic effort”. He listed the Armenological Centers and magazines in Diaspora, and particularly, in Lebanon, such as the Haigazian University and its Armenological journal, the Armeniological Department of San Jose University, Pan-National Armenological Highest Institution, «Hask» periodical of the Armenian Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, « Հիւսիսեան » Armeniological institution of AGBU, etc. Addressing the current major problems in Armeniology, Dr Dumanyan listed the main challenges, particularly: lack of appropriate scientific-methodical information, material support, lack of funding; lack of human resources, poor links between the scholars from the Diaspora and Armenia, Turkish-Azerbaijanian unlawful infringements (especially, during the recent period). Dr. Dumanyan presented the content of the recent 34th issue of Haigazian Armenological Review, emphasizing the importance of Armenology and mentioning that the magazine is beneficial also for the Armenian writers, as the first issue of the journal in 1970 stated that the Armenian scholars also should be considered.
He concluded his speech by quoting one statement made by Garegin Nzhdeh that was published in «Hayrenik» periodical in Boston yet in 1933: « book preserves the Armenian as an Armenian in a foreign land».
Then the long-term editor of the Haigazian Armenological Review, Father Andranik Kranian took the floor and expressed his appreciation of the continuous, quality nature and the content of the journal. «Haigazian Armenological journal is a unique occurrence in the post–Genocide reality of Diaspora, it is an exceptional phenomenon, in view of the long period of its activity» – stressed Father Kranian
A speech was delivered also by the Chairman of Haigazian University, Dr. Paul Haidostian, who greeted the last issue of the Haigazian Armenological Review, stating that the day has a unique annual connotation for the Haigazian University.
On this occasion, Dr. Haidostian gave a big thank to the staff of the Haigazian Armenological Review, and particularly, Rev. Fr. Andranik Kranian.
At the end, the participants were invited to the cookie cutting procedure and on the occasion they were given one copy of the book titled «The Haigazian University. Series of fine events dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Armenian Printing from May 5, 2013 to March 22, 2013».
