Parliament of Overjissel province of the Netherlands recognizes the Armenian Genocide

During its July 2 session, the Parliament of Overjissel province of the Netherlands passed a resolution stating the Parliament’s position on the Turkish organizations’ June 1 protest against the Armenian Genocide Memorial placed in the yard of the Armenian Church in Almelo. During the protest, the Turks had made offensive and disrespectful statements against the Armenians and had crudely denied the Armenian Genocide. The resolution presented by the deputies of the factions of the Christian Union (CU), Reformed Political Party (SGP), Party for Liberty (PW) and the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) cite the barbarous massacres of 1.5 million people (Armenians, Assyrians and Pontos Greeks) in the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1918.

The authors of the resolution reject the protest of the genocide deniers and inform that they recognize the Armenian Genocide, reflecting on the resolution adopted by the Parliament of the Netherlands in 2004. With this resolution, the parliament of the province is giving Armenians the signal that they have the right to have a place where to commemorate the victims.

The Federation of Armenian Organizations of the Netherlands (FAON) and the Armenian National Committee of the Netherlands have submitted an complaint to the law-enforcement authorities of the Netherlands last week against the statements made during the Turks’ rally held on June 1, 2014.
