20 of the 38 Armenians kidnapped in Kessab have been released-Hranush Hakobyan
After the attack on Syria’s Armenian-populated town of Kessab, there were contradicting rumors about the fate of nearly 30 Armenians remaining in Kessab. Based on those rumors, the 30 Armenians had been kidnapped.
In an interview with Tert.am, RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan informed that she had just spoken with the mayor of Kessab and had information according to which 20 of the 38 Armenian hostages had been released.
“There are still talks on the remaining 18,” said Hranush Hakobyan.
The minister informed that another danger facing Kessab is that foreigners are settling in the homes of Kessab-Armenians. But on the other hand, it’s good that the homes are not being robbed.
The attack on Kessab from Turkey began on Mar. 21. More than 600 Armenian families of Kessab were deported to Latakia located 60 km away from Kessab and mainly settled near the Saint Mary Church.
A group of deputies of the Armenian parliament visited Latakia and had a meeting with the Kessab-Armenians.
The clashes between government forces and soldiers (mainly groups considered terrorist groups) for Kessab continue. There were rumors that the Syrian government forces have advanced near Kessab and have reached several peaks.
Earlier, Kessab-Armenians in Latakia had told Tert.am that they had news about their homes and items being robbed.
