Events dedicated to Mother Language Day kick off

The festive events dedicated to Mother Language Day and organized by the RA Ministry of Diaspora kicked off on February 21st. In 1999, UNESCO declared February 21st as International Mother Language Day, and the day was marked on the state holiday calendar of the Republic of Armenia in 2005.
As part of the events, RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan and renowned intellectuals visited Oshakan and laid flowers at the tomb of Mesrop Mashtots. Among the attendees were Governor of Aragatsotn province Sargis Sahakyan, Head of the Department of General Education at Yerevan Municipality Gayane Soghomonyan, Director of the Hrachya Atcharyan Language Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia Victor Katvalyan, Head of the Chair of New and Modern Armenian Literature at the Armenian State Pedagogical University after Kh. Abovyan, Director of “Diaspora” Scientific-Educational Center Suren Danielyan, as well as other linguists and literary critics.
Syrian-Armenian boys and girls recited poems and performed songs devoted to the Armenian language during an event held at the scholars’ home adjunct to the church in Oshakan. Among the participants were students of the Mesrop Mashtots Middle School of Oshakan. The school’s principal Naira Mkrtchyan mentioned that the residents of Oshakan always hold events dedicated to the mother language.
Afterwards, the participants of the event visited the Armenian Institute of Manuscripts after Mesrop Mashtots (Matenadaran) and laid flowers near the statue of Mesrop Mashtots.
