It didn’t take too long before Azerbaijan burst into outrage over Los Angeles City Council’s recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. According to “ArmenPress”, citing Azerbaijan’s APA news agency, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an ��?epoch-making’ statement on the recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic by another state of the United States. Speaker of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs Elman Abdullayev has viewed the city council’s decision as “absurd” and has underlined the fact that “the official Washington doesn’t recognize such a state”. Abdullayev has also announced that the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles will submit an official letter of protest to the city council.

The city council of Los Angeles, which is one of the largest cities of the United States, has unanimously recognized the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic as an independent and sovereign state. The Resolution states that the NKR contributes to stability in the Caucasus with the conduct of free and fair elections. There is also reference to Nagorno-Karabakh’s struggle for self-determination that has inspired several nations in the region. At the same time, the city council urges the international community to properly recognize the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic as a free, independent and sovereign state. The author of the Resolution is member of the Los Angeles City Council Paul Kerkorian.
