Exhibition featuring Armenian-language and foreign-language presses opens in Istanbul

Istanbul’s Depot Gallery has opened a new exhibition entitled “From 1990 to Today: The Multilingual Presses of Istanbul”. The exhibition was organized by Istanbul Bilgi University with the support of the Swedish Embassy in Istanbul and Anadolu Kültür Cultural Foundation.

As reported Ermenihaber, the exhibition featured samples of the Armenian Zhamanak Daily, Gor Magazine (published by the Hamshen-Armenian community), the Kurdish-language Roza Magazine, the more than 25-year-old Kurdish Nûbihar Magazine and other newspapers published by national minorities.

The exhibition’s curator and lecturer of Istanbul Bilgi University Bulent Bilmez stated that this event is of major significance in terms of presenting the foreign-language presses of Istanbul to the public.

Bilmez highlighted the fact that the history of press in Istanbul is not homogenous at all since it also includes the newspapers published by a number of national minorities as well. However, today, many people have a very obscure notion of foreign-language publications in Istanbul.

“Those attending the exhibition today say they never knew that so many magazines and daily newspapers were published in Istanbul and in so many languages. Today they come to the exhibition and see that the press in Istanbul is not monochrome, but diverse and versatile. They see some copies and ask each other what it is and what language it is in. Later, they find out that those newspapers are either in Hamshen, Kurdish or Armenian,” Bilmez said.

Let us mention that the exhibition will run until March 18.
