Two suspects under the case of murder of editor-in-chief of Turkey’s Agos Armenian Weekly Hrant Dink have been released. According to Agos Weekly’s website, the 14th Court of Heavy Crimes of Istanbul, which is in charge of Dink’s case, examined the complaint of suspects Okan Shimshek and Veysel Shahin, who were in custody, but the court upheld their complaint and released them.
The justification in the criminal judgment states the fact that Shimshek and Shahin have reported to their superiors the information — received within the scope of their duties — and have not used the Bylock mobile app. The court emphasized that detention for these two suspects was only applied as a measure of restraint and that the nature of the charge brought against them might change.
At the same time, the court prohibited Shahin and Shimshek from leaving the country and established judicial supervision.
Okan Shimshek and Veysel Shahin were employees of the Intelligence Unit of the Gendarmerie of Trabizon before the murder of Hrant Dink and learned about the plan for Dink’s murder from Joskun Igiji. When testifying in court, they stated that they had reported that information to the Intelligence Unit on time, but had not received any instruction to take any action, writes Ermenihaber.am.
