Events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Spitak Earthquake held in the USA

Events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Spitak Earthquake were held on the U.S. East Coast. The Surp Vardan Church and other churches in New York held Requiem Masses, and the AGBU dedicated its annual concert to the memory of the victims of the 1988 devastating earthquake at Carnegie Hall in New York. Among the participants of the event were the AGBU President, Armenia’s diplomats to the UN, foreign guests and members of the local Armenian community.
The concert held at Holy Trinity Apostolic Church in Boston included performances of classical and spiritual music by Yerevan Choir and Orchestra with the participation of the New York Metropolitan Opera and under the direction of composer Konstantin Petrosyan.
Primate of the U.S. Eastern Diocese, Archbishop Khazhak Parsamian and Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Karen Nazaryan delivered their welcoming remarks at the concert. In his speech, Nazaryan mentioned that it’s impossible to forget the humanitarian assistance and benevolent acts of countries, Diaspora Armenian organizations and individuals that helped mitigate the consequences of the earthquake that struck the Armenian nation on the days of the disaster and after the disaster. Expressing gratitude for standing by Armenia’s side and the efforts made throughout the past 25 years to ease the burden, Ambassador Nazaryan talked about the large-scale activities carried out in the earthquake-devastated cities and regions.
