The annual Hagop Boghosian Scholarship Essay Contest (dedicated to the memory of prominent Armenian journalist, publicist, political commentator and translator Hagop Boghosian) was launched in 2002 by Boghosian’s widow, U.S.-based Ani Boghosian and is aimed at helping schoolchildren excel, encourage them to learn Armenian and be creative, as well as provide them with the opportunity to show their knowledge during healthy competitions.
As reported the Tekeyan Center Fund to Hayern Aysor, recently, the results of the annual scholarship essay contest were summed up during an event held in the Hagop Boghosian Classroom at Tekeyan School #92 in Yerevan (the contest was held at Tekeyan Center on 8 October). The topics of this year’s essay contest were “Peace” and “With the Wings of a Dream”. Among the participants were the school’s 8th grade students, who all received the Hagop Boghosian Scholarship.
Hagop Boghosian was born in 1936 in Lebanon. He attended the Mesrobian Armenian Catholic School and the AGBU Hovakimian-Manoogian School, received his higher education at the American University in Beirut and completed courses on international journalism at the University of London. He was raised with the Armenian spirit and patriotism and had a love for Armenian culture and language. At an early age, he realized the importance of preservation of the Armenian identity, and starting from his years in college, he was actively involved in pro-national activities in the Armenian community of Lebanon. He served as a correspondent for Harach, Harach Literary and Zartonk newspapers. In 1989, he and his family moved to the United States and quickly assumed the office of editor-in-chief of California’s Nor Or Armenian newspaper. He also served as managing secretary of AGBU California. He has received the TCA Rita and Vardges Balian Media Award. He passed away in 2001.
