Meeting of Armenian and Iraqi Ministers of Foreign Affairs

On December 3, RA Minister of Foreign Affairs had a meeting with Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs Hoshyar Zebari, who is on an official visit to Yerevan, reports the RA MFA press office to “Hayern Aysor”.

Greeting the guest, Minister Nalbandyan mentioned with satisfaction that recently the partnership between the two countries has grown considerably and voiced hope that the Iraqi Foreign Minister’s visit would bring a new sweep to the development of cooperation in different spheres. Minister Nalbandyan also welcomed the reopening of the Embassy of Iraq in Armenia.

Expressing gratitude for the invitation to visit Yerevan and the cordial reception, Minister Zebari said that Iraq would like to deepen cooperation with the friendly Armenia and that the main purpose of his visit is to reach agreements on that. Hoshyar Zebari attached importance to the contributions of the Iraqi-Armenian community to the country’s advancement and prosperity.

During the meeting, the sides talked in detail about the promotion of bilateral relations, that is, the activation of political dialogue, the strengthening of cooperation within international organizations, the expansion of the juridical-contractual field, as well as cooperation in the spheres of trade, economy, science, education and culture. The ministers touched upon the possibility of facilitating the visa regime between the two countries.

At the guest’s request, RA Minister of Foreign Affairs presented Armenia’s and the international community’s efforts for a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Hoshyar Zebari informed Edward Nalbandyan about the Iraqi government’s actions aimed at ensuring stability and security in the country.

The ministers also discussed in detail several regional and international issues, including the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the organizing of the Geneva-2 Conference devoted to Syria.

After the meeting, the ministers signed a Memorandum of Mutual Understanding on Reciprocal Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Iraq and held a joint press conference.
