Armenian community of Bulgaria’s Krjali celebrated International Mother Language Day

On February 21, RA Honorary Consul in Plovdiv Yeghiazar Uzunyan and Cultural Affairs Advisor to the Honorary Consul Aghavni Gevorgyan celebrated International Mother Language Day at the invitation of the Armenian community of the Bulgarian city of Krjali.

“The majority of the citizens of this small city are Turks, and the Armenians are few in number. However, they do have a small club and an organization called “Sevan”. Honorary Consul Yeghiazar uzunyan and I are hosted in this city twice a year so that we can celebrate the significant Armenian national holidays. We try to help the community preserve our national holidays, as well as customs and traditions through these events,” Aghavni Gevorgyan said in an interview with Hayern Aysor.

During the meeting, Cultural Affairs Advisor to the Honorary Consul delivered a short lecture devoted to the Ghevondyan and Vardanants holidays, touched upon the creation of the Armenian alphabet and talked about the Armenian translation of the Bible with photos and to the sounds of Armenian music.

“The members of the Armenian community and their Bulgarian friends listened to the stories with great interest. We hope our lectures helped enlighten our compatriots and instill new feelings in them. The meeting continued at the local Armenian club where the Armenians of the small Bulgarian city showed photos of their ancestors that they had preserved for years. It is very touching to meet our compatriots in small communities,” Aghavni Gevorgyan said.

Among those attending the lecture were Head of Sevan Organization Hakob Uzun-Poghosyan and representative of the Municipality of Krjali Petya Nazarova.

At the end of the meeting, Petya Nazarova donated an album dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Balkan War and the liberation of the city.

“It was a very interesting album featuring photos of the lives of the Armenians of Krali, including various celebrations, the oldest Armenian café and more.  All this will remain as a good memory for the future generations. We will also show the album to the guests at the cultural center in Plovdiv,” Aghavni Gevorgyan stated and added that, on the occasion of Vardanants Day and International Mother Language Day, Yeghiazar Uzunyan made a donation to the Armenian school of Plovdiv that will be distributed to the pupils who learn the mother language with pleasure and vigor.
