Commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Missak Manouchian’s arrest

On November 16, the National Union of Armenian Participants and Veterans of France’s Resistance Movement commemorated the 70th anniversary of Missak Manouchian’s arrest in the French city of Evry where he and Joseph Epstein had been arrested by French policemen. Among the participants of the commemoration event were Minister-Delegate for Veterans in France Cader Arif, as well as Mayor of Evry Francis Chouat and several political figures and guests.
On the morning of November 16, 1943, French national hero, writer and translator of Armenian origin Missak Manouchian was arrested by German commanders at his underground home in Evry, which was also his headquarters. The police also arrested 68 people suspected of having links to Manouchian’s group. Manouchian was tortured, and three months later (in February 1944), at the age of 37, Manouchian was executed, along with 21 members of the famous Manouchian Group.
