Several generations of Turks have learned poem devoted to Armenian woman by heart

The Folkloric Arts Museum of Izmir has opened an exhibition devoted to Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, who is one of the most famous Turkish poets and painters of the 20th century and whose best works are devoted to Mari Gerekmezyan.

“The exhibition showcased several paintings from the “My Mulberry Tree” series (from the homonymous poem by Eyüboğlu). They are the portraits of the painter’s lover, Mari Gerekmezyan, who is considered one of the first women sculptors in Turkey,” writes Hurriyet Daily.

Hurriyet Daily also shares the love story of Eyüboğlu and Gerekmezyan, stating that the poem “My Mulberry Tree” was written in 1947 (a year after the death of the Armenian woman) and is dedicated to the muse of the Turkish writer.

The poem “My Mulberry Tree” is considered the most beautiful poem of modern Turkish poetry that several generations of Turks have learned by heart, writes 168.am.
