Istanbul’s Kamp Armen Armenian camp to serve as youth center

The plan for restoration of Kamp Armen Armenian orphanage in the Tuzla district of Istanbul is ready.

According to Sondakika-24 news website, the camp will serve as a center for youth and technologies and will remain as an orphanage.

President of the foundation for the Armenian Protestant Church and school of Gedikpasha Krikor Agabeloglu informed that restoration would begin when the Municipality of Tuzla refuses to use the phrase “administrative area” written on the plan for restoration of the camp.

“In that case, we will be able to launch the program. It will be a great joy for us. We want the competent bodies to deal with the issue as soon as possible. We are waiting for good news from the municipality.”

Let us remind that Kamp Armen Armenian camp is an abandoned and dilapidated building located in the Tuzla district of Istanbul. In 1961, the 8,552 square meter campsite was purchased by the foundation for the Armenian Protestant Church and went on to serve as a summer camp for needy and orphan students of the local Armenian school. Hrant Dink and his wife, Raquel Dink grew up there. Later, the Turkish authorities illegally took the camp away from the Armenian community.

In 2015, the camp’s owner decided to demolish the building, but after the young Armenians’ long struggle, the camp was returned to the rightful owner, that is, the foundation for the Armenian Protestant Church of Gedikpasha.
