Deputy Head of Armenian community of Marbella says the fact that the Spanish city of Marbella recognized the Armenian Genocide is what’s important
Thanks to the cooperative efforts that the Armenian community of the Spanish city of Marbella made over the past year, Marbella recognized the Armenian Genocide, as Deputy Head of the Armenian community of Malaga Vaspurakan Baghdasaryan told Tert.am.
“We worked with the Municipality of Marbella with the desire to introduce them to the history of Armenia and the Armenian Genocide. As a result of our efforts, the municipality recognized the Armenian Genocide. We also received assistance from the Embassy of Armenia in Spain led by Avet Adonts,” he said.
On September 30, the leadership of the Spanish city of Marbella unanimously recognized the Armenian Genocide.
Vaspurakan Baghdasaryan said the members of the community had told the authorities of the Spanish city about the Armenian Genocide through photos and videos. “They were shocked and didn’t believe that people could have treated the Armenian nation so brutally. They couldn’t understand how it was perpetrated,” he said.
According to Vaspurakan Baghdasaryan, the municipal authorities of Marbella received the leaders with warmth and pleasure. “They highly appreciate Christianity, and we Armenians are the first nation that adopted Christianity as a state religion.”
Vaspurakan Baghdasaryan stated that people in Marbella and in Spain are not informed about Armenia and the Armenian Genocide. “They are cut off from world history, and the local Armenian community does everything it can to change this. We mainly organize events for the youth so that we can achieve results like the recognition of the Armenian Genocide,” he said, stating that what’s important is the fact that the Spanish city of Marbella recognized the Armenian Genocide since it is a touristic city and many people visit the city.
