Rare childbirth: 11.530lb baby delivered without intervention in Armenia’s Tavush

A maternity hospital in an Armenian border village has registered an unprecedented childbirth.

An infant weighting 11.530lb (5.230kg) was born without a surgical intervention in the health center of Achajur (Tavush region) on Monday evening.

Speaking to Tert.am, the hospital’s head doctor said the delivery required painstaking work by the medical personnel assisting in the process. “The delivery was complicated; we couldn’t assign C-section has the childbirth had already begun. Both [the mother and infant] are now in a satisfactory condition,” said Koryun Vardapetyan, an obstetrician-gynecologist.

“This kind of natural childbirths are very rare in Armenia. We never had any in our center before; it was the first case,” he said.
