German delegates visit Armenian village and church in Turkey

According to the Turkish Haberler, German Members of Parliament, who are visiting Turkey within the scope of the visit to the Injirlik military base, have also visited the Vakifli village of the Samandagh region of Hata. The village is now known as the only Armenian village in Turkey, as reported Ermenihaber.

The German delegation has been introduced to the history of the Armenian village and local church. Representative of the local museum Kuhar Kartun particularly informed that the Armenian church of Vakifli was renovated in 1997. The residents of the village are Christian Armenians. Overall, there are 130 residents (35 families). The history of Vakiflii traces back to the 1300s.

In response to a question from one of the delegates, Kartun informed that the church is open for pilgrims and that people mainly visit the church on Sundays. The museum’s representative also stated that the church of Vakifli is under the subordination of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Let us remind that on 2 June, the German Bundestag almost unanimously adopted the resolution recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide, after which Turkey prohibited Germany from visiting German soldiers serving at the military base of Injirlik.

Later, Turkey demanded that Germany reject the Armenian Genocide resolution in order to visit Injirlik. Although Germany didn’t reject the resolution, Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that the Bundestag’s resolution was not legally binding. After this statement, Turkey allowed the Germans to visit the 250 German soldiers in Injirlik after a three-month hiatus.
