“Armenian Day” in Poland’s Olava

On October 1, several events entitled “Armenian Day” were held in the Polish city of Olava under the auspices of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Poland and the Municipality of Olava. The events were organized by the community library of Olava and the Armenian Foundation based in Poland, as reported the press service of the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The vestibule of the Municipality of Olava hosted the official opening of the exhibition called “The Participation of Armenians in the Defense of Poland”, which showcased remarkable Armenians who have participated in the defense of Poland in different periods of time.
On the same day, the ceremonies hall of the Municipality of Olava hosted a solemn event dedicated to Armenia and to the Armenian community of Poland. Among the speakers were RA Ambassador Edgar Ghazaryan, Mayor of Olava Tomas Grisman, Assistant to the Voyvod (Governor) of Dolnoslonsk for National and Ethnic Minorities Yustina Matkovska and director of the community library of Olava Yanina Kordis.
In his speech, Ambassador Ghazaryan stated that it was a great pride for him to become familiar with the history of the Armenian community of Poland and learn about the major role that the Armenians have played throughout the history of Poland. He also noted that such events provide a wonderful opportunity to present Armenia, as well as the history and culture of the Armenian people spanning millennia to the friendly Poles.
During the event, lecturer of the Jagiellonian University of Krakow, Associate Professor Renata Krol-Mazur gave a lecture entitled “Brief History of the Armenian Community in Poland”. Vice-President of the Armenian Foundation of Poland Matsey Bohosevich presented facts and documents devoted to Yadivga Dzarugevichova, the symbolic mother of the Unknown Soldier of Poland. In her turn, President of the Armenian Fund Martha Aktsentovich-Bohosevich touched upon the programs that her Foundation is carrying out to discover the history of the Armenian community of Poland.
The cultural part of the event included performances by Polish-Armenian dudukist Hovik Hovhannisyan.
On the same day, head of the Armenian Catholic Church of Poland Tadeus Isakovich-Zalesky served a Holy Mass at the Notre Dame Cathedral of Olava.
