Union of Writers celebrated Ler Kamsar’s 125thbirthday anniversary

The Union of Writers of Armenia celebrated the 125th birthday anniversary of writer, satirist Ler Kamsar on October 22. Several intellectuals, members of the Union and simply people who appreciate Kamsar’s literature presented the writer’s life and career.

“Ler Kamsar was a publicist, and since he wasn’t published, he would simply write on paper. He would write every day. He was honest and sincere in his writing.

Readers understand him. His works are current even today. There was a time when I would take his works and submit them to printing houses, but I was told that Kamsar’s works were antediluvian. They were afraid of losing their jobs. But I started publishing his works that had been preserved. I will continue to publish his works,” Ler Kamsar’s granddaughter, Vanuhi Tovmasyan told ArmenPress.

Reference: According to Wikipedia.am, Ler Kamsar (Aram Tovmaghayan) was born in 1888 to a family of a clergyman in Van, Western Armenia. He received his primary education at a local American school and went on to study at the Gevorgyan Lyceum and worked as a teacher. His first satirical pamphlet “Geography of Kamsar” was printed in Van’s “Labor” newspaper in 1910. Kamsar was also a correspondent for several newspapers in Yerevan.

From 1935 to 1955, he was sentenced to prison in Yerevan and spent many years in exile.

Ler Kamsar died in 1965 in Yerevan.

The origin of the writer’s pseudonym is interesting. When he was submitting his first works, he was asked what the name of the author should be. Ler Kamsar didn’t attach too much importance to that, turned around and said, ?Write “ler”…”kam sar”.
