Modern Armenian music is spreading worldwide

A 23-year old Finnish musician Maria-MillaLathela, who is a one-year exchange student at Örebro University in Sweden, recently performed one of Tigran Hamasyan´s songs during the concert organized by the university.

Although it was the organizer of the concert who made the choice of the song, Maria-Milla confesses that she knew quite little about Armenia as a country and she enjoyed singing Armenian. “I am familiar with Hamasyan´s art as he is very famous in Scandinavia and I should say that Armenian is not an easy language, it is pretty hard. First I thought that it should sound like Russian then I figured out that it sounds more like Greek than Russian. Anyway, in the end I came to the point that Armenian is just a unique language´´.

Sharing her emotions about her performance, Maria-Milla says that the song itself gave her some mystical feelings. ´´First, I was curious of what the song tells about. That is why I turned to an Armenian student who also studies at Örebro University, and asked her to translate the text. But even after I knew the lyrics, I had the same mystical feeling. As the language itself has a mystery in it: it sounds beautiful, but at the same time it sounds rough which I like so much. I would love to learn Armenian and sing more Armenian songs´, concludes Maria-MillaLathela.
