During the May 16 meeting in Vienna, the Armenian side wanted to know if the negotiations are in a labyrinth or not. This is what President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan told journalists on the way back from Vienna.
“Our goal was to find out if the negotiations have really entered a labyrinth and there is no way out, or we can solve the problem with minimum casualties,” the head of state said and stated that the results of the meeting were satisfactory. “Overall, my colleagues and I are satisfied with the results of the meeting, and we can talk more clearly about this when the Co-Chairs issue their statement. There is no need to touch upon the details due to several factors. Nevertheless, the President of Azerbaijan assured that his country and he personally don’t have a goal to solve a problem through military operations.”
At the same time, President Sargsyan hinted that the Azerbaijani leader’s assurances should be treated with skepsis.
“You understand very well and, I think you can even predict my response, which is the following: it is good, but it doesn’t instill much hope because there have been several conversations like that, but in reality, the agreement hasn’t been maintained for several years now,” Serzh Sargsyan stated and added: “But we don’t have the right to be guided only by our assumptions or predictions because war is not the best solution. So, let’s see how the events will develop. In any case, we are ready for any outcome. Of course, our desire is for that outcome to be achieved peacefully.”
