Human Rights Watch: Turkish border guards are shooting and beating Syrian refugees

Turkish border guards have shot and beaten Syrian refugees and smugglers.

This is what Human Rights Watch informed in its recent report.

The report was prepared through interviews with victims and witnesses and states that Turkish border guards have killed five people, including a child, and have seriously injured 14 people over the past two months.

“While senior Turkish officials claim they are welcoming Syrian refugees with open borders and open arms, their border guards are killing and beating them,” said Gerry Simpson, senior refugee researcher at Human Rights Watch.

In August 2015, the law-defense organization had reported that Turkey was pushing back Syrians trying to reach Turkey.

The report also states that Turkish border guards have also blocked thousands of fleeing displaced persons after their camps near the border had been hit by artillery fire.

Turkish border guards are charged with several cases of shooting and beating, injuring three children aged 3-9 and beating a smuggler to death. Syrians living near the border also reported that Turkish border guards had shot at them as they were trying to recover bodies at the border wall.

Human Rights Watch has sent a letter to Turkey’s Minister of Internal Affairs, urging the government to investigate the allegations.
