The fact that the clashes in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone took place when the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan were in Washington, DC, should have received a strong reaction from the US.
Frank Pallone, Co-Chair of the US Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, told about the above-said to the Voice of America Armenian service.
Pallone, together with fellow Co-Chair Robert Dold, has launched a petition to zero-out US military assistance to Azerbaijan.
The congressman stressed that he was concerned by the Azerbaijani government’s recent aggressive statements, and noted that these eventually led to the recent events.
Pallone stated that the objective of their aforesaid petition is to make the US government to more seriously react to what occurred, and by cutting off its military assistance to Azerbaijan.
But the US Congress member noted that, first, he wants to be convinced that the US is still a part of the Karabakh peace talks. He said sometimes it seems that the respective monopoly is given to Russia, and that their objective is to increase the role of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group, which is engaged in finding a resolution to the Karabakh conflict.
Frank Pallone added that for years he has said that major steps need to be taken to prevent potential conflicts.
