Azerbaijani media accusing Amal Clooney of being an ethnic Armenian

Azerbaijan’s pro-government presses are accusing human rights lawyer Amal Clooney of protecting Khadija Ismayilova’s rights in the European Court of Human Rights, reports Panorama.am, writes The Guardian.

The Guardian notes that the well-known lawyer and Media Legal Defence Initiative have agreed to challenge the detention of Azerbaijani investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova, stressing the fact that her extended pre-trial imprisonment violates the European Convention on Human Rights.

“The Azerbaijani media, which often acts as a mouth piece for the government, responded to the news by accusing Clooney of harbouring a vendetta against the Turkic countries of central Asia,” writes The Guardian.

The Guardian cites the Azerbaijani presses’ articles in which Clooney is accused of being of Armenian descent and of defending the interests of the Armenians in the ECHR.

According to The Guardian, the Azerbaijani media’s attacks on Amal Clooney are due to the fact that the latter was also the lawyer for Armenia, which acted as a third party to the Perincek vs. Switzerland case in the ECHR.
