Turkish presses’ reactions to scholars’ arrests, emphases on Armenians

The statement signed by 1,128 Turkish scholars supporting a peaceful resolution of the Kurdish issue and protesting against the curfew hour declared in Kurdish-populated areas has caused a commotion in Turkey. The slogan for the statement is “We Won’t Be Accomplices In This Sin”. Turkish newspapers are covering the scholars’ statement and the criminal prosecutions that have begun against them with interesting commentaries. As reports ermenihaber.am, the emphases are especially seen on the covers of the newspapers.

Cumhuriyet newspaper, which has recently become famous for its oppositional views, released news about the scholars’ arrests with the headline reading “Sounds Of Feet Of Fascism” and posted the text of the statement that has become a reason for criminal prosecutions.

The oppositional Evrensel newspaper has used the headline “The Voices Of Peace Remain Loud”, and the pro-Kurdish “Özgür Gündem” newspaper posted the title for the news on the cover as “You Won’t Be Able to Bring Us Down”. For a photo, the newspaper used one of the photos taken during the anti-government protests that began in Gezi Park and shocked the entire country.

Hurriyet newspaper, which is somewhat loyal to the authorities, used the title “The Police Are Near The Door” for the news about the arrests. The more daring Sözcü newspaper described the scholars’ arrests with the title “The Pressures Of The Police And The Arrests Are The Consequence Of What”.

Zaman and Taraf newspapers, which are considered the presses for the Gulen Movement, also criticized the arrests with their articles entitled “Arrests At A University Settlement” and “Earthquake Of Arrests At Universities”, respectively.

Pro-government newspapers opposed the mentioned newspapers and expressed their full support to the arrests.

The newspapers of the government’s camp referred to the statement of the scholars as treason. Among those newspapers are Sabah, Akşam, Star, Güneş, Vatan and Aydınlık. The Yeni akit newspaper posted the most extremist and most anti-Armenian title, that is, “Those Betraying Signatories Turned Out To Be Fans Of The Armenians”.

Let us remind that the “For Peace” initiative, which is protesting against the curfew hours and clashes that have been going on for a long time in the Silvan, Sur, Nusaybin, Jizreh and Silop districts of Istanbul, recently issued a statement with the slogan “We Won’t Be Accomplices In This Sin”, and 1,128 Turkish scholars and 400 supporters of different countries have already signed under the statement. They demanded putting an end to the assaults against and restrictions on the people living in the above mentioned districts immediately. An investigation has been initiated against the Turkish scholars, and dozens of people have already been arrested because of this statement.
