Materials devoted to Komitas found in German archives and will be compiled
Germany has started discovering and examining documents devoted to the life of Komitas in German archives with the support of the German Embassy in Armenia, reports Yerkir Media.
The Komitas Museum-Institute and Armenia’s Ministry of Culture have undertaken the initiative and have discovered and brought to Armenia several documents devoted to the period of Komitas’s study in Germany. The experts also visited the Saxon State Archives of Leipzig where there are documents kept by the ancient musical publishing house of Europe. Chairman of the academic council of the Komitas Museum-Institute Mher Navoyan mentioned that the searches for manuscripts and documents in other German archives continue.
“German archives suffered many damages during WWII. It’s a pity that archival documents related to many musicians were lost during those years. The documents related to Komitas might also have been lost. Nevertheless, it is our duty to do our job and check as much archives as possible,” Mher Navoyan said. “It’s really hard to search for 100-year-old documents in archives that have been either damaged or eliminated. Nevertheless, we hope the cooperation with German research centers is fruitful,” Deputy Ambassador of Germany to the Republic of Armenia Nadia Lichtenberg said.
