The Sandcastle Girls is a U.S. bestseller
The novel The Sandcastle Girls, which is about the Armenian Genocide, has become a bestseller in the United States of America and has been translated into different languages.
According to 168.am, the author of the novel is Armenian American writer Chris Bohjalian, whose novels have been turned into several Hollywood films in North America and Canada. In one of his interviews, touching upon the topic of the novel, Bohjalian said it was his second attempt to write a book devoted to the Armenian Genocide. According to the author, his made his first attempt in 1999, but after reading the incomplete novel, he decided to leave it incomplete and revisited the topic in 2010.
The writer has reflected on the Armenian Genocide due to his roots tracing back to Western Armenia. Besides that, he is concerned about the wrong or insufficient information about the Armenian Genocide in North America. Released in 2012, the novel, according to the writer, is a love story told during the Armenian Genocide. The novel represents two stories. One of them is about Elizabeth Endicot and Armen Petrosyan, who meet during the Armenian Genocide in Syria. The other is about their granddaughter, Laura Petrosyan who, after 100 years, tried to understand why they don’t talk about their teenage years. She is living in a time that is totally different from the time when her grandparents fell in love.
According to USA Today, Bohjalian has revived the events that took place nearly a century ago in a way that the reader is left breathless after reading about the horrible events, that is, Turkey’s decision to wipe all Armenians off the face of the Earth.
Chris Bohajlian says when he was just starting to write the novel, he couldn’t imagine that it would become a bestseller or would be translated into several languages. According to him, it’s not very easy to become a successful writer in America.
The writer admits that even though he’s considered a successful writer, he actually doesn’t know what the secret of that is.
Chris Bohjalian is an Armenian American novelist, author of 15 novels and has written the bestsellers “Midwives” and “The Sandcastle Girls”.
