Turkish MFA criticizes Charles Michel’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide

Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sharply criticized Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel for calling the events that took place in the Ottoman Empire 100 years ago genocide on June 20.

According to Neue Zürcher Zeitung, during a parliamentary session, on behalf of his government, the Prime Minister recognized the Armenian Genocide and declared that the tragic events that took place between 1915 and 1917 and perpetrated by the last government of the Ottoman Empire need to be viewed as genocide, writes Artsakhpress.

“This statement isn’t historically accurate. It may have a negative impact on the relations between Turkey and Belgium. Charles Michel’s statement is unacceptable. This can in no way be justified,” as stated in the statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
