Books presented during the 5th Conference of Writers of Armenian Origin Composing in Other Languages entitled “Globalization and National Identity”
The presentations of the Armenian version of U.S.-based writer Peter Suryan’s novel “Miri” and U.S.-based writer Natella Lalabekyan’s collection of poems and short stories entitled “Non-Casual Meetings” were held on the sidelines of the 5th Conference of Writers of Armenian Origin Composing in Other Languages called “Globalization and National Identity”. The conference is organized by the RA Ministry of Diaspora and the Union of Writers of Armenia.
Famous U.S.-based writer, publicist, Professor of English Language and Literature Peter Surian is author of several short stories and three novels, including “Miri” (1956), “From the Best and Worse Times” (1961) and “Gate” (1965), as well as essays and a collection of critiques and television and analytical articles.
The Armenian version of the collection of short stories entitled “Dinner with the Stranger” was released in Yerevan in 2010 and was followed by the release of “Gate” in 2011.
“Miri”, which was published when the author was 24 years old, is a story about a love affair between two university students. It is written in a lyrical style and is based on thoughts, memories and sentimental feelings and refers to the topic of Armenians in the subtext, even though the main characters are Greek.
The book was translated into English by Aram Arsenyan.
Natella Lalabekyan is an art critic, a member of the Unions of Writers of Moscow and Armenia and author of five books, including “I Invented Your Image” (1977), “From Image to Character” (2002), “To Be Continued” (2008), “Road that Leads to Me” (2010” and “Non-Casual Meetings”.
The book “Non-Casual Meetings” is both prose and poetry of the prose writer. In the book, the author tried to give meaning to and “save” the land, people and events that have “survived” thanks to a memory that was relived.
After the presentations, the participants of the conference visited the Kecharis monastic complex.
The first day of the conference ended with the screenings of Von Pilikyan’s film Assembly Two and Tatyana Danielyants’s film Hidden Garden.
The conference will continue on July 13th.
