Hakan Bakircioglu, attorney of the family of Istanbul-Armenian journalist and founding editor-in-chief of Istanbul’s Agos Armenian Weekly, has demanded that the Turkish court initiate an investigation against 13 former officials of the Gendarmerie of Istanbul and Trabizon, reported Agos, according to Tert.am.
Among the officials who mainly have contacts with the intelligence department is one of the commanders of the Gendarmerie of Istanbul Unal Karaosmanoglu, who the lawyer claims is responsible for not ensuring Dink’s safety properly.
Bakircioglu has submitted to the General Republican Prosecutor’s Office of Istanbul materials that show that Karaosmanoglu had received information about threats against Dink before his murder and was consequently responsible for ensuring his safety.
The attorney drew attention to the fact that in 2005, Kraosmanoglu had signed the decision on taking Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk under special protection, but had hesitated when the need for similar protection of Dink emerged.
On January 19, 2007, Hrant Dink was assassinated by 16-year-old Turkish ultranationalist Ogyun Samast in front of the editorial office of Agos Weekly in Shishli District of Istanbul. The trial over Hrant Dink’s murder has been going on for a decade.
