Armenian family of Dersim has decided to move to Armenia

Founder of the Union of Armenians of Dersim Mihran Prkic Gultekin and his wife, Karin Gultekin, plan on moving to Armenia. Today, on March 2, they will apply for Armenian citizenship.

In an interview with “Armenpress”, Karin, who was baptized and accepted Christianity in Germany three years ago, talked about why they had made such a decision. “We are living in a country where we were massacred and forced to convert to a religion that is not ours. We don’t want to live in Turkey. After leaving Turkey, Mihran and I will apply for Armenian citizenship,” she said.

Karin talked about how she and her husband had always been a target in Turkey and added that even when they were still Muslims, people would point at them and say, ?Look, they are Armenian’ After being baptized, she was forced to quit her job at the restaurant that she had been working in for about 15 years since she had been told that “people wouldn’t eat dishes made by a ?gyavur’.” “What is the difference? You are a Muslim, I am an Armenian. I don’t want to live the life that they are imposing. I want to save myself from all that,” Karin said, emotionally. Karin and Mihran have two sons who welcome their parents’ decision to move to Armenia. “Both of my sons are baptized. One of them is currently studying in Germany, and the other is a journalist. They call me and always say, ?Mother, do whatever you want to do. Don’t be afraid’. I have finally decided to take this step,” Karin said. She and her family visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex and the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute yesterday. Karin had trouble sharing her impressions.

“It’s impossible to talk about or describe the pain. Of course, we knew about the Genocide, and had read and seen a lot. My mother had told me about the massacres…The pain can’t be forgotten. It is the only thing that can’t be erased from a person’s memory,” Karin said. Karin doesn’t know what she will be doing in Armenia after the move, but says she is a worker and will do anything. “I will definitely come,” she added, smiling.
