Artsakh presidential elections set for July 19

The presidential elections of Artsakh are set for July 19. This is stated in the statement of Speaker of the National Assembly of Artsakh Ashot Ghulyan, which reads as follows:

“Pursuant to part 1 of Article 168 of the Constitution of the Artsakh Republic, the National Assembly shall, not earlier than 50 days following and not later than 40 days before termination of the powers of the President of the Republic, upon the proposal of the factions, elect the President of the Republic, who shall serve until the end of the term of the powers of the current National Assembly.

Pursuant to part 2 of Article 149 of the Law of the Artsakh Republic “On the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly”, factions shall nominate candidates for President of the Republic no earlier than 64 days and no later than 57 days before the end of the powers of the President of the Republic.

Under the established procedure and within the prescribed time limits, the following two candidates have been nominated for the office of President of the Republic between 5 and 12 July:

Eduard Aghabekyan (father’s name: Artavazd) (nominated by the faction of Movement-88 Party),

Bako Sahakyan (father’s name: Sahak) (nominated by the factions of Hayrenik Party, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun Party and Democracy Party).

Taking into consideration the time limits for election of the President of the Republic provided for by the Constitution and the requirements of parts 3 and 4 of Article 149 of the Law of the Artsakh Republic “On the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly”, the election for President of the Republic by the National Assembly will be held during the special session of the National Assembly, which will be convened on 19 July 2017 at 11:00 by virtue of law.”
