The struggle for recognition of the Armenian Genocide helped improve the human rights situation in Argentina
The Armenian National Committee of South America has issued a statement on the 40th anniversary of the coup d’état in Argentina. As reports “Armenpress”, citing prensaarmenia.com.ar, the statement reads that Argentina has made great achievements in human rights protection since the reinstatement of democracy.
“Our struggle for recognition of the genocide perpetrated against the Armenian people, justice and reparations recorded its greatest achievements when human rights issues were generally advanced. At the same time, speaking out about Armenian issues was also helpful in terms of recognizing the crimes committed against humanity in Argentina,” the statement reads.
The Armenians of Argentina also stress the fact that every anniversary of the 1976 coup d’état provides an opportunity to revisit the past and build the future, without denying the past. As a result of the coup d’état that took place in Argentina in 1976, President Isabel Peron stepped down.
The military junta led by General Jorge Rafael Videla, Admiral Emilio Eduardo Massera and Brigade General Orlando Ramón Agosti took power and maintained it until 1983 when Great Britain lost the Falklands War.
