Australia to host lecture devoted to Arshil Gorky and his art
Author of the book Abstract Expressionism and the Armenian Genocide, Assistant Professor of Arts Kim Teriolt will give a lecture devoted to renowned Armenian American painter Arshil Gorky and his work at the Armenian cultural center in Australia. As reported by “ArmenPress”, citing the Armenian National Committee of Australia, the July 14 lecture is organized through the combined efforts of the Armenian National Committee of Australia and the Haigazian Committee of Australia. Such lectures are especially important from the angle of presenting the impact of Armenian culture on Gorky’s art. “The works of art created by the survivors are of academic significance for genocide scholars. The art of survivors of the Armenian Genocide has remained marginal due to the lack of serious evaluations of intellectuals. This lecture entitled “Reinterpretation of Arshil Gorky” will fill that gap. His works are very popular in the world of arts, but he is better known as an American painter, but the great impact of the Armenian heritage is overlooked in his art,” these are the words of Sarah Couhan stated on the flyer for the lecture and are published in the article “Genocide Studies and Prevention” at the University of Toronto.
Arshil Gorky (Vostanik Adoyan) is one of the great masters of Western painting. His modern works created through his way of expressing art reflect the spirit of Armenians. Arshil Gorky’s paintings are kept at several notable museums in the United States (Whitney American Art Museum, the Metropolitan, etc.), as well as the Tate Museum of London, the George Pompidu Modern Art Museum of Paris and elsewhere and have been showcased at several cities around the world, including Yerevan. The Arshil Gorky Foundation was established in Yerevan since 2004.
