Czech gypsy survivors of the Holocaust to receive reparations from Germany

Nearly 10-15 Czech gypsy survivors of the Holocaust will each receive 2,500 Euros in reparations from the German Ministry of Finance. This is what an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic announced, according to Ria Novosti. According to the official, negotiations between the countries “have been going on for a couple of months”.

Throughout WWII, German Fascists led a policy on eliminating gypsies in the seized territories.

The protectorate of Czechoslovakia and Moravia, which was established by the authorities of the Third Reich in the territory of modern-day Czech Republic, expelled all gypsies (nearly 6,500,000 gypsies). In the beginning, most of them were placed in collective camps located in the territory of the protectorate, after which about 5,000 gypsies were transferred to Auschwitz. After the war, only 583 gypsies returned.
