Garo Paylan: “When anyone talks about the Armenians or Kurds, the Islamists, Kemalists and nationalists of Turkey stand united as one”

On his Twitter page, member of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party, Turkish-Armenian MP Garo Paylan commented on the criticism targeted against him and the commotion caused after his scandalous speech.

“When anyone talks about the Armenians or Kurds, the Islamists (referring to the ruling Justice and Development Party-tert.am), the Kemalists (referring to the People’s Republican Party) and nationalists (Nationalist Movement Party) stand united as one in Turkey,” wrote Paylan.

Let us remind that Garo Paylan reminded everyone about the Armenian Genocide during a discussion on the draft of the constitutional amendments in parliament. Paylan particularly stated that the country needs a Constitution that will protect the rights of all layers of the diversely religious and multiethnic society of Turkey.

Paylan reminded that the first copy of the Turkish Constitution was drawn up by Armenians and emphasized that the country entered into a chaos after the authorities started presenting copies of the Constitution that were in the interests of only the Turks, just like now.

“During that period of chaos, we lost four nations-the Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians and Jews, who were either exiled or subjected to tortures as a result of great massacres and genocides,” Paylan said.

The deputies representing Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party and Nationalist Movement Party interrupted the Armenian MP, screaming “terrorism of the Dashnaks” and “the rebellions of the Armenians” and boycotted his speech by banging on tables. Paylan was also criticized by members of the oppositional People’s Republican Party.

Garo Paylan was punished for using the term “genocide” and deprived of the right to participate in the upcoming three sessions. Paylan’s words were removed from the minutes of the session.
