Turkish intellectuals’ precautionary statement addressed to Erdogan’s regime

A group of famous Turkish journalists and intellectuals have signed under a statement strictly criticizing the regime of President of Turkey Recep Tayyib Erdogan, writes ermenihaber.

According to the website of Turkey’s oppositional Cumhuriyet newspaper, the statement entitled “Warning to the Regime of Erdogan: Enough is Enough” is signed by renowned individuals like writer, publicist Baskin Oran; writer, journalist Hasan Cemal, as well as intellectuals Zeynep Tunbay, Fikret Bashkayan and others.

In their statement, the journalists and intellectuals touch upon the defects that have become radicalized as a result of Erdogan’s dictatorial inclinations in politics and in all spheres of public life.

“The frequent and growing scandals will wipe away everyone and everything remaining in this country. The regime of Erdogan shouldn’t think it will get away with all this,” the statement reads.

The journalists and intellectuals have especially focused on the pressure that the government has exerted on universities and state that, until now, the country’s authorities have already handed three universities over to state governors.

They also talk about the latest legislative amendments to deprive deputies of the Turkish Mejlis of immunity, which is mainly targeted against the pro-Kurdish Democratic Party of Nations (HDP).

“The Parliament is being emptied. The immunity of the members of the second largest oppositional political party has been eliminated. The police will be knocking their doors tomorrow,” the statement reads.

The statement also discusses the large-scale crackdown on specialists in the judiciary. As a result, Erdogan has filled the judiciary with people who are loyal to him. According to the Turkish intellectuals, the next target is the Constitutional Court, which has managed to resist the government’s crackdown.

The extensive statement also touches upon issues that are problems for Turkey, including the destruction of Kurdish-populated areas, the catastrophic state of freedom of press, persecutions against journalists and non-governmental organizations, the extreme Islamization of the country and several other issues.
