Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: political will needed – Matthias Kiesler

A settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict requires willingness by both the conflicting parties, German Ambassador to Armenia Matthias Kiesler stated at a discussion on Germany’s three-month-long chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The Nagorno-Karabakh problem is of special interest.
No doubt, the OSCE Minsk Group, with the three co-chairs, is the only format for the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process and dialogue between the conflicting parties. Reducing border tension remains the top priority. Regrettably, escalation along the line of contact continues. German supports the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs in investigating the ceasefire violations, Mr Kiesler said.
They continue cooperating with Ambassador Andrzej Kasprzyk, and the newly appointed envoy in the South Caucasus is visiting the region next month.
Mr Kiesler is sure that both the conflicting parties need willingness to achieve the goal. The principles have been agreed on. Both the conflicting parties must stop making provocative statements. Immediate contacts between the two peoples are of importance as well.
The OSCE is one of the security pillars in Europe and proved its worth during the Ukraine crisis.
