TUMO Wins a 2019 Europa Nostra Award

On May 21, the European Commission and Europa Nostra announced that the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies has won a European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award in the Education, Training and Awareness-Raising category! Funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe program, the award recognizes significant achievements in conservation, research, dedicated service, and education, training and awareness-raising.

“TUMO has a clear understanding of learning processes and has provided an interdisciplinary approach, allowing for the involvement of groups of sensitive adolescents in various fields of education through the use of new heritage based technologies. The educational activities have led to the digitization of aspects of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage,” noted the award jury, consisting of heritage experts from across Europe.

“At TUMO, 12 to 18 year-olds from all backgrounds combine their local, cultural heritage with state-of-the-art international tools, engaging in cultural learning targets such as animation, game development, music, writing and robotics. An important example is a project organised in partnership with the Smithsonian Institute and CyArk, where a group of teenagers worked on the 3D mapping of the ancient monastery of Noravank and the Areni cave complex, two iconic heritage sites in Armenia,” wrote Europa Nostra.

“I am immensely proud to congratulate all winners of the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2019. These heritage heroes – professionals and volunteers from across Europe – have accomplished something truly amazing. Their work to restore, preserve, support or promote Europe’s heritage monuments and sites, as well as the intangible heritage of Europe, is of the highest quality imaginable,” stated Plácido Domingo, renowned opera singer and President of Europa Nostra.

This year, TUMO is among 25 laureates from 16 countries being recognized by the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award. The individuals and initiatives include the restoration of the Chapel of the Holy Shroud in Turin, the development of a digital archive of the Roma, and an NGO which has been committed to heritage protection in Norway for over 175 years. The Paris Fire Brigade is also being  honored with an award for bravely and skillfully battling the fire that ravaged the Notre Dame cathedral on April 15th.

The 2019 winners will be honored at the European Heritage Awards Ceremony on October 29th in Paris, during the European Heritage Congress.
